Type a percentage and the decimal equivalent appears straight away. The rule is simple: divide by 100, which moves the decimal point two places to the left.

Converting a percentage to a decimal

The word percent literally means "per hundred", so 45% is 45 parts out of 100, or 45 ÷ 100 = 0.45. A decimal is the same quantity written with the whole number as the unit instead of the hundred, which is why the conversion is always a division by 100.

decimal = percent ÷ 100Equivalent to shifting the decimal point two places to the left.

Percentages below 100% give decimals below 1, 100% is exactly 1, and anything above 100% gives a decimal greater than 1. Negative percentages work the same way and keep their sign: −8% becomes −0.08.

How to convert percent to decimal

  1. Write the percentage without the % sign.
  2. Divide it by 100, or move the decimal point two places to the left. Add leading zeros if you run out of digits.
  3. Use the result in your calculation, for example by multiplying it by an amount.

Example 1. 7% → 7 ÷ 100 = 0.07. The number has no decimal point written, so imagine it after the 7 (7.), then move it two places left.

Example 2. 62.5% → 62.5 ÷ 100 = 0.625.

Example 3. 250% → 250 ÷ 100 = 2.5, because 250% is two and a half times the whole.

Example 4. 0.4% → 0.4 ÷ 100 = 0.004. A percentage that already has a decimal point simply moves it two places further.

The converter rounds the decimal to six places, so a percentage smaller than 0.00005% is displayed as 0.

Using the decimal in a calculation

Spreadsheets and calculators multiply by the decimal form, not by the % symbol. Three typical uses:

  • A share of an amount: 15% of 80 is 0.15 × 80 = 12.
  • Adding a rate: a 40 dollar bill with 8% sales tax costs 40 × 1.08 = 43.20, where 1.08 is 1 plus the decimal 0.08.
  • Taking a rate off: 30% off a 60 dollar item leaves 60 × 0.70 = 42.

For questions such as "what percent of A is B" or the change between two values, the percentage calculator handles every variant, and the percent to decimal calculator shows the working step by step.

Common mistakes

  • Moving the point only once. 5% is 0.05, not 0.5. Two places, always.
  • Confusing 0.5% with 0.5. Half a percent is 0.005; the decimal 0.5 is 50%.
  • Forgetting to convert before multiplying. Multiplying 80 by 15 gives 1,200, which is 100 times too large for a 15% share.
  • Mixing percentage points and percent. A rise from 4% to 6% is 2 percentage points (0.02 as a decimal), not 0.06.

To reverse the process, multiply the decimal by 100 with the decimal to percent converter.

Frequently asked questions

How do you convert a percent to a decimal?

Divide the percentage by 100, which is the same as moving the decimal point two places to the left. For example, 35% becomes 0.35.

What is 0.5% as a decimal?

0.5% is 0.5 ÷ 100 = 0.005. It is one tenth of 5%, which is 0.05.

Can a percentage be bigger than 100%?

Yes. 150% is 1.5 as a decimal, meaning one and a half times the original amount. Percentages above 100% describe a quantity that exceeds the whole it is compared with.

How do I turn a decimal back into a percent?

Multiply the decimal by 100 and add the % sign: 0.045 × 100 = 4.5%.
