Enter the numerator and denominator and the decimal value appears as you type. The guide below shows how to do the division by hand and when a decimal repeats.

Fractions as division

A fraction is an unfinished division. The line between the numerator (top) and the denominator (bottom) means "divided by", so 3/8 is just 3 ÷ 8. Converting to a decimal means finishing that division.

decimal = numerator ÷ denominator

How to convert a fraction to a decimal

Divide the numerator by the denominator. If the numerator is smaller, put a 0 and a decimal point in the answer and keep adding zeros to the remainder as you divide.

Example: 3/8. 30 ÷ 8 = 3 remainder 6; 60 ÷ 8 = 7 remainder 4; 40 ÷ 8 = 5 remainder 0. The division ends, so 3/8 = 0.375.

Example that repeats: 7/12. 70 ÷ 12 = 5 remainder 10; 100 ÷ 12 = 8 remainder 4; 40 ÷ 12 = 3 remainder 4, and that remainder of 4 keeps coming back. The decimal is 0.58333…, and the converter shows 0.583333.

Mixed numbers: turn the number into a single fraction first. For 2 3/4 multiply the whole part by the denominator and add the numerator, 2 × 4 + 3 = 11, then enter 11 over 4 to get 2.75. You can also convert the fraction alone (3/4 = 0.75) and add the whole part.

Terminating or repeating?

Once a fraction is in lowest terms, you can tell what its decimal will do from the denominator alone. If the denominator has no prime factors other than 2 and 5, the decimal ends: 1/8 (2 × 2 × 2) is 0.125 and 3/20 (2 × 2 × 5) is 0.15. Any other prime factor, such as 3 in 1/6 or 7 in 1/7, makes the decimal repeat forever. 1/7, for instance, cycles through 142857.

  • Rounded to 6 decimal places. 1/3 shows as 0.333333 and 2/3 as 0.666667.
  • Zero denominator. 7/0 shows Infinity, and 0/0 shows NaN, because division by zero has no value.
  • Decimals and negatives are allowed in both boxes: 2.5 ÷ 0.4 gives 6.25 and −1 ÷ 4 gives −0.25.
  • Empty boxes count as 0.
  • Tiny results below half a millionth round to 0.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert 3/4 to a decimal?

Divide 3 by 4. That gives 0.75.

How do I convert a mixed number to a decimal?

Change it to an improper fraction, then divide. For 1 1/2, 1 × 2 + 1 = 3, so you enter 3 over 2 and get 1.5. Or add the whole part to the fraction's decimal: 1 + 0.5.

Why does 1/3 show 0.333333 and not 0.333…?

A repeating decimal never ends, so the converter rounds it to six places. Writing 0.333… with the dots, or 0.3 with a bar over the 3, is the exact form.

What happens if the denominator is 0?

Division by zero is undefined. The converter shows Infinity (or NaN when the numerator is also 0) instead of a usable decimal.
