How decimals become percentages
The word percent means "per hundred". A decimal like 0.25 says how many hundredths you have, and a percentage says the same thing with a hundred as the base: 0.25 is 25 hundredths, so it is 25%. The decimal 1 stands for the whole thing, which is 100%.
percent = decimal × 100Equivalent shortcut: move the decimal point two places to the right and add the % sign.
How to convert a decimal to a percent
- Multiply the decimal by 100, or shift its decimal point two places right.
- Write a % sign after the result.
- Drop trailing zeros you do not need.
Example: 0.375 × 100 = 37.5, so 0.375 is 37.5%.
Small decimal: 0.0725 becomes 7.25% and 0.005 becomes 0.5%. The point moves two places each time, and you add zeros as placeholders only when you run out of digits.
Above one: a decimal larger than 1 is more than the whole. 1.2 becomes 120% and 2.5 becomes 250%, which is how growth of more than 100% is written.
What the converter shows
- The answer is shown without the % sign in the box; the sign sits beside it.
- Up to 6 decimal places. 0.123456789 is 12.3456789% exactly, and the converter rounds it to 12.345679.
- No thousands separators or trailing zeros. 1000 becomes 100000, not 100,000.00.
- Negative decimals keep their sign: −0.5 becomes −50.
- An empty box counts as 0, and very large inputs switch to exponent form such as 1e+22.
Using the percentage once you have it
Rates are often stored as decimals in spreadsheets and code, and read as percentages by people. An interest rate of 0.065 is 6.5%. To apply it, you can go straight back to the decimal: 6.5% of 1,200 is 0.065 × 1,200 = 78.
A percentage always refers to some base amount, so 20% of 80 (which is 16) is a different quantity from 20% of 500 (which is 100). If you need the percentage of a specific number, or the percent change between two values, use the percentage calculator.
When you report a percentage, round it to the precision your readers need. 0.123456789 is 12.345679% to six places, but 12.3% is usually enough in a sentence.

Frequently asked questions
How do I convert 0.5 to a percent?
Multiply by 100: 0.5 × 100 = 50, so 0.5 is 50%.
How do I turn a decimal into a percentage by hand?
Move the decimal point two places to the right and add a % sign. For 0.07 that gives 7%, and for 0.4 it gives 40%.
Can a percentage be more than 100?
Yes. A decimal above 1 means more than the whole, so 1.75 is 175%. This is common for growth figures and ratios against a target.
Why is my result rounded?
The converter keeps up to six decimal places in the percentage. A decimal with more precision than that, such as 0.123456789, is rounded to 12.345679%.
