Enter a date of birth and, if you like, the date to measure the age on. The calculator returns the exact age in years, months and days along with the totals in months, weeks and days.

What is chronological age?

Chronological age is the time that has passed since a person was born, measured on the calendar. It does not say anything about health, maturity or ability, which is exactly why it is useful as a neutral yardstick: everybody born on the same day has the same chronological age on the same date.

Schools use it to place children in year groups, clinicians and psychologists use it to pick the right norms for a developmental or cognitive test, and sports bodies use it to sort athletes into age brackets. The same arithmetic also dates objects, so you can enter the day a building was finished or a product was made in place of a date of birth.

It is easy to confuse with other kinds of age. Biological age describes how the body is functioning compared with typical values, mental age describes the level of performance on a test, and corrected age subtracts the weeks a baby was born early. Chronological age is the plain calendar figure that these other measures are compared against.

How to use the calculator

  1. Pick the date of birth (or the date of manufacture or construction).
  2. Pick the date in Calculate age on. If you leave it empty the calculator measures the age as of today.
  3. Press the button. The date to measure on must not be earlier than the date of birth.

The results come as six lines:

  • Chronological age spells out the age as completed years, months and days.
  • Age in years is the completed years only.
  • Age in months, Age in weeks and Age in days are totals; weeks are rounded down.
  • Running age is the year of life being lived: completed years plus one. A newborn is in the first year of life, so the running age is 1 year old.

Once a person is at least one year old, Age in months is the total number of completed months (for example 437 for 36 years and 5 months). For a child under one year it shows 0, so read the months from the first line instead.

How the age is calculated

The calculator counts forward from the date of birth in three steps: whole years first, then whole months, then the days that are left over. The calendar does the work rather than a fixed month length, so it stays correct across leap years and short months.

age = whole years + whole months + remaining daysEach step is added to the date of birth before the next one is counted.

Example: born 15 May 1990, measured on 19 October 2026. Adding 36 years reaches 15 May 2026. Adding 5 more months reaches 15 October 2026. Four days remain until 19 October, so the chronological age is 36 years, 5 months and 4 days. In total that is 13,306 days, which is 1,900 weeks and 6 days, and the running age is 37.

29 Feb 200028 Feb 202625 years, 11 months, 30 days9,496

The words in the first line stay plural even for a count of one, so one year, one month and one day reads "1 years, 1 months, and 1 days".

Month ends and leap-day birthdays

A month is not a fixed number of days, and that matters when the birth day does not exist in the month being counted. Take someone born on 31 January 2001. One month later would be 31 February, a date that is not on the calendar, so the count rolls forward into March. Measured on 1 March 2001 that person has not yet completed a month and the answer is 0 months and 29 days; measured on 10 March it is 1 month and 7 days.

People born on 29 February are handled the same way. In a common year their anniversary falls on 1 March, so on 28 February 2026 someone born on 29 February 2000 is 25 years, 11 months and 30 days old, and one day later they have completed 26 years.

If you only need to know how many years old someone is, or how many days are left until the next birthday, the age calculator and the birthday calculator are built for those questions.

Where chronological age is used

  • Testing and assessment. Test manuals publish norms by age band, usually in years and months, so the exact figure decides which table applies.
  • Education. Cut-off dates for starting school or entering a grade are written against age on a given day.
  • Sport and competition. Age brackets are fixed on a reference date, often 1 January or the start of the season.
  • Legal and administrative thresholds. Driving, voting and retirement ages are all counted from the date of birth.
  • Objects and records. Machines, buildings and accounts can be aged in exactly the same way.

This calculator gives calendar arithmetic only. For clinical or educational decisions follow the instructions of the test publisher or a qualified professional, and see our disclaimer. To measure a stretch of time that includes hours and minutes, use the date and time duration calculator.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between chronological age and biological age?

Chronological age is the time since birth measured on the calendar. Biological age tries to describe how well the body is functioning compared with others, so it can be higher or lower than the calendar figure.

How is the age of someone born on 29 February worked out?

In years that are not leap years the anniversary is taken as 1 March. A person born on 29 February 2000 is 25 years, 11 months and 30 days old on 28 February 2026 and turns 26 on 1 March 2026.

What is running age?

Running age is the year of life a person is in, which is the completed years plus one. Someone aged 36 years and 5 months is living through their 37th year, so the running age is 37.

Can I calculate an age on a past or future date?

Yes. Put any date in the Calculate age on field, as long as it is not earlier than the date of birth. This is handy for finding the age someone was or will be at an event.
