How to use the day counter
- Enter the start date and the end date. An empty field means today, so you can type just one date to count from or to the current day.
- Set Include last day to Yes if the end date itself should count as a full day, or leave it on No.
- Press Count Days.
Two figures come back. Calendar days between the dates counts every day, weekends included. Workdays between the dates counts only Monday to Friday. The order of the dates does not change the calendar-day total, and the workday count looks at the days between the two dates whichever comes first: the start date is always counted and the end date only when you choose to include the last day.
How the days are counted
Subtracting one calendar date from another gives the number of midnights crossed, which is the number of days that have to pass to get from the first to the second. Each date is treated as a whole day with no time attached, so clock changes cannot add or remove an hour from the total.
days between = end date − start date (+ 1 when the last day is included)
Example: from Monday 19 October 2026 to Friday 25 December 2026 there are 67 days: 12 days left in October, 30 in November and 25 in December. With the last day included the count becomes 68. The same stretch reaches 1 January 2027 after 74 days, and exactly one year later, on 19 October 2027, after 365.
Should the last day be included?
Both answers are right; they answer slightly different questions. Counting without the last day gives the length of the gap, the way you would count nights in a hotel: check in on the 19th and out on the 22nd is 3 nights. Counting with the last day gives the number of calendar days you are involved in, the way a conference running from the 19th to the 22nd lasts 4 days.
Pick the option that matches how the period is defined in your contract, notice letter or plan. When in doubt, say which convention you used.
Workdays in the range
The workday figure counts the Mondays to Fridays from the start date up to, but not including, the end date. For 19 October to 25 December 2026 that is 49 workdays: nine full weeks make 45 and the four weekdays of 21 to 24 December make 49.
With Include last day on Yes, the end date joins the count: one is added to the calendar days, and one to the workdays only when the end date is a Monday to Friday. Ending on Friday 25 December gives 68 calendar days and 50 workdays, while ending on Saturday 26 December gives 69 calendar days and still 50 workdays, because a Saturday is not a workday.
Public holidays, company closures and local weekends are not taken into account. For a stricter count of business days use the working days calculator, and for a plain calendar gap in days, weeks and months see the days calculator.
Which calendar is used?
The counter uses the Gregorian calendar, the civil calendar in use almost everywhere. A year is a leap year when it divides by 4, except for century years, which must divide by 400. So 2024 and 2000 were leap years while 1900 and 2100 are not, and February 29 is counted wherever it exists.
The Gregorian rules are applied to every date, including those before the calendar was adopted. Countries switched at different times: much of Catholic Europe in 1582 and Britain and its colonies in 1752, so a count that crosses those switch-overs will not match what the local calendar of the day showed. For ordinary modern dates this makes no difference.
Common uses
- Countdowns to holidays, exams, deadlines and moves.
- Counting days since an event, such as a streak, a quit date or an anniversary.
- Checking notice periods, trial periods and warranty windows.
- Planning project phases with the number of working days available.
- Working out how long an invoice or a loan has been outstanding.
To go from a date to a new date, rather than between two dates, use the add days calculator. To count whole months, use the month counter.
Frequently asked questions
How many days are there between two dates?
Subtract the earlier date from the later one. From 19 October 2026 to 25 December 2026 the answer is 67 days, or 68 if the last day is included.
Does the day counter include weekends?
The calendar day figure includes every day. The separate workday figure counts only Monday to Friday and does not remove public holidays.
Can I count the days from a date to today?
Yes. Leave either date empty and it is treated as today, so entering only a start date counts the days since it and entering only an end date counts the days left.
Does the counter handle leap years?
Yes. February 29 is counted in every leap year, so the span from 19 October 2026 to 19 October 2028, which includes the leap day of 2028, is 731 days.
