How to use the anniversary calculator

Pick the kind of anniversary with the radio buttons: Wedding, Relationship or Other for any event such as a first day at work, a graduation or moving into a home. Then enter the date and press Calculate. The date cannot lie in the future, because the calculator measures time that has already passed. For a relationship, an empty date field means today.

The results list the date of the next anniversary, how many days remain until it, which anniversary it will be, and the time elapsed so far in years, months and days, followed by the same elapsed time as separate totals of years, months, weeks and days.

How the next anniversary is found

The calculator first counts the complete years since the start date. The next anniversary is that many years plus one after the start date, and the number of years plus one is also which anniversary it will be.

next anniversary = start date + (complete years + 1) years

Example. A couple married on 12 June 2010. On 19 October 2026 they have been married for 16 years, 4 months and 7 days. The next anniversary is therefore 12 June 2027, 236 days away, and it will be their 17th. Because they have completed 16 years, they are currently in their 17th year of marriage, which is not the same as having had 17 anniversaries.

If the start date is exactly today, no anniversary has happened yet. The next one is a year ahead and counts as the 1st. Likewise, on the day of an anniversary the completed-years figure already includes that year, so the following anniversary is shown as the next one.

Anniversaries that fall on 29 February

A date of 29 February exists only in leap years. In years without one, the calculator lets the date roll forward, so an event on 29 February 2012 has its next anniversary on 1 March 2027. Some people prefer to celebrate on 28 February instead, and that is a personal choice; the totals of months and days still count correctly either way.

Counting in months, weeks and days

A yearly view hides smaller milestones, and many couples like to mark round day counts or monthly dates. Adding 1,000 days to 12 June 2010 gives 8 March 2013, and adding 10,000 days gives 28 October 2037. An average year is 365.2425 days, so 1,000 days is about 2.74 years and 10,000 days about 27.38 years.

When the traditional and modern gift are the same, as at the 40th, 45th, 50th and 55th, the result calls it a timeless gift for that anniversary. You may also hear the 25th called the silver anniversary, the 50th golden and the 60th diamond.
