Enter a height, choose the unit it is in and the unit you want, and the converted value appears instantly. It works for any length from nanometers to miles, with centimeters, meters, feet and inches being the ones people use for body height.

What units of height are supported?

The converter handles eleven units, from the very small to the very large: nanometers, micrometers, millimeters, centimeters, decimeters, meters, kilometers, inches, feet, yards and miles. Body height is normally given in centimeters or meters in most of the world, and in feet and inches in the United States, the United Kingdom (informally) and a few other places.

Every conversion goes through meters. The factors for the imperial units are exact, because since the 1959 international agreement they are defined in terms of the meter:

UnitExact length in meters
1 inch0.0254 m (25.4 mm)
1 foot0.3048 m (12 inches)
1 yard0.9144 m (3 feet)
1 mile1,609.344 m (1,760 yards)

The answer is rounded to nine decimal places, with thousands separators in the whole part and trailing zeros removed. Extremely small or large answers switch to exponent form, so one nanometer in meters reads 1e-9.

Height conversion examples

A height in feet is usually stated as feet plus inches, but the converter reports decimal feet. To get the pair you are used to, keep the whole feet and multiply the decimal part by 12.

Centimeters to feet

A person is 168 cm tall. Divide by 30.48: 168 ÷ 30.48 = 5.5118 ft. The whole feet are 5, and 0.5118 × 12 = 6.14, so the height is 5 ft 6.1 in.

Feet and inches to centimeters

Someone is 5 ft 7 in. Convert everything to inches first: 5 × 12 + 7 = 67 in. Then 67 × 2.54 = 170.18 cm, or 1.7018 m. You can also enter 5.5833 (5 ft 7 in as decimal feet) in the feet field and convert to centimeters.

Meters to feet

A doorframe is 1.83 m high. 1.83 ÷ 0.3048 = 6.0039 ft, which is 6 ft and 0.047 in, practically exactly 6 feet. For quick mental estimates, 1 m is a little over 3.28 ft.

Tips and common mistakes

  • Decimal feet are not feet and inches. 5.5 ft is five and a half feet, which is 5 ft 6 in. Reading it as 5 ft 5 in is a frequent slip.
  • Measure consistently. Body height varies by up to a couple of centimeters over a day, so measure barefoot against a wall at the same time of day when you compare values.
  • Round at the end. Convert with the full precision shown, then round the final figure to the accuracy you need.

To compare two people's heights visually use the height comparison tool, or estimate a child's adult height with the height calculator. For other lengths, try the length converter or the metric converter.

Frequently asked questions

How many centimeters are in a foot?

One foot is exactly 30.48 centimeters, since 1 ft = 0.3048 m.

How do I convert cm to feet and inches?

Divide the centimeters by 2.54 to get inches, then divide by 12: the quotient is the feet and the remainder is the inches. For 168 cm: 66.14 in is 5 ft 6.14 in.

How tall is 1.8 meters in feet?

1.8 ÷ 0.3048 = 5.9055 ft, which is about 5 ft 10.9 in.

Why does the converter show 1e-9 for tiny results?

Results are rounded to nine decimal places and written as plain numbers. A value as small as one billionth is shown in exponent form, 1e-9, and anything smaller than half of that rounds to 0.
