Enter an energy in joules and the converter shows it in kilojoules at once. A kilojoule is a thousand joules, so the answer is your value divided by 1,000.

How many joules are in a kilojoule?

One kilojoule (kJ) is 1,000 joules (J). The prefix kilo stands for one thousand in the metric system, the same as in kilogram or kilometer, so there is nothing to memorise beyond that.

kJ = J ÷ 1,000To go from kilojoules to joules, multiply by 1,000 instead.

Difference between joules and kilojoules

Both units measure energy. The joule is the SI unit: it is the work done when a force of one newton moves something one meter, and equally the energy delivered by one watt in one second. Everyday amounts are often large when counted in joules, so the larger kilojoule is used for convenience.

Typical places you see each one:

  • Joules: small mechanical or electrical energies, such as a camera flash or lifting a small weight. Lifting a 1 kg object by 1 meter takes about 9.8 J.
  • Kilojoules: food labels in many countries, heating and cooking energy, and engineering data. One food calorie (kcal) is 4.184 kJ, so a 250 kcal snack carries 1,046 kJ.

How to convert joules to kilojoules

  1. Take the energy in joules.
  2. Divide it by 1,000, which moves the decimal point three places to the left.
  3. Write the result with the unit kJ.

Joules to kJ conversion example

A 100 W light bulb stays on for one minute, which uses 100 × 60 = 6,000 J. Divided by 1,000 that is 6 kJ.

Another: 45,500 J ÷ 1,000 = 45.5 kJ. And a very small amount, 75 J, becomes 75 ÷ 1,000 = 0.075 kJ.

The converter rounds to six decimal places, so any input smaller than 0.0005 J displays as 0 kJ.

Choosing between J and kJ

A good rule is to pick the unit that keeps the number between about 1 and 999. A result such as 0.003 kJ is more readable as 3 J, and 4,200,000 J is clearer as 4,200 kJ (or 4.2 MJ). Switching units does not change the quantity, only how it is written.

Be careful with the capital letters: J is the joule, kJ is the kilojoule and mJ (lower-case m) is the millijoule, one thousandth of a joule. Mixing up kJ and mJ is a million-fold error. The converter here only works with the first pair.

The input accepts decimals and negative numbers. Negative energy values appear in physics, for example when a system gives off heat, and are divided by 1,000 in the same way.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert joules to kilojoules?

Divide the number of joules by 1,000. For instance 2,500 J ÷ 1,000 = 2.5 kJ.

How many kilojoules is 500 joules?

500 J is 0.5 kJ, because 500 ÷ 1,000 = 0.5.

Is a kilojoule the same as a kilocalorie?

No. A kilocalorie (the food "Calorie") equals 4.184 kilojoules, so a kilojoule is only about a quarter of a kilocalorie.

Why does a very small value show as 0?

The result is rounded to six decimal places. A kilojoule value below 0.0000005 rounds to zero, which happens for inputs under 0.0005 J.
