Enter a first and last year and press the button to draw one month, shown as month name and year. With both years left at the default you get a random month of the current year.

How to use the random month generator

Type the first year of the period in the From year box and the last year in the box after to, then press Pick a Random Month. The answer appears as a month name followed by a year, for example March, 2027.

Both boxes start on the current year, so pressing the button straight away gives you a random month of this year. To draw from several years, make the second number larger. That second number can equal the first or exceed it, but never be smaller; if it is, the tool tells you the range is back to front.

Years are read as whole numbers: 2020.9 is cut to 2020, an empty box counts as year 0, and negative years are printed as plain negative numbers. The calendar is the ordinary twelve-month Gregorian one.

How the draw works and what the odds are

Every year has exactly twelve months, so the tool treats the range as a pool of 12 × (number of years) months and gives each one the same chance. Internally it picks a year uniformly from your range and then a month uniformly from the twelve, which is equivalent.

chance of any one month = 1 ÷ (12 × years in the range)

Example: for 2026 to 2028 there are three years, so 36 months, and each has a 1 ÷ 36 ≈ 2.78% chance on every draw. Each press of the button is a fresh, independent draw, so seeing July twice in a row says nothing about the next result.

Drawing from a window shorter than whole years

The form only takes years, so there is no way to say "between July 2026 and March 2028" directly. The workaround is to enter the surrounding whole years and press the button again whenever the result falls outside your window. Keep the first draw that lands inside it.

Example: the window July 2026 to March 2028 holds 6 months of 2026 (July to December), 12 of 2027 and 3 of 2028, which is 21 months. Drawn from 2026 to 2028 (36 months), a single press lands inside the window with probability 21 ÷ 36 ≈ 58.3%, so on average you need 36 ÷ 21 ≈ 1.7 presses. Redrawing until you are inside the window is still a fair, uniform pick among those 21 months.

Months of the year at a glance

The standard calendar has twelve months of unequal length. The generator ignores those lengths: February is as likely as December. If you want days weighted by how many days there are, a random date draw does that, and our random date generator is the better fit.

Seven months have 31 days, four have 30, and February has 28 or 29, giving 365 or 366 days a year.

Whether a given year is a leap year is a separate question, answered by the leap year calculator.

When a random month is useful

  • Choosing which month to take a trip, start a habit or run a yearly challenge.
  • Giving each person in a group a month for a rota or a recurring task.
  • Writing prompts, history quizzes and classroom games.
  • Spreading checks or audits across the year without always starting in January.

To count how many months lie between two dates instead of picking one, use the month counter. For a name or a team instead of a month, see the random name picker.

Frequently asked questions

Is every month equally likely?

Yes. All months in your range have the same chance, whatever their length. With a three-year range each of the 36 months comes up with probability 1 in 36.

Can I pick a month between two particular dates, such as July 2026 to March 2028?

Not directly, because the form takes whole years. Enter 2026 to 2028 and press the button again whenever the month falls outside the window you want; the first draw inside it is a fair pick among the months you allow.

What happens if I leave the year boxes empty?

An empty box is read as year 0, so leaving both empty returns a month with year 0. If only the end year is empty while the start year is positive, the start is after the end and you get an error. Normally the boxes start on the current year.

Does the tool care about leap years?

No. It only names a month and a year, never a day, so February 29 never enters into it. Use the leap year calculator to check whether a particular year has 366 days.
