Using the random country generator
Choose where to draw from in Pick a random country from: all continents, Europe, Asia, Africa, North America, South America, or Australia & Oceania. Tick Include territories if dependencies and autonomous regions should have a chance too, then press the button. One name appears, and the label tells you whether territories were allowed ("Country" or "Country or Territory").
Every entry in the chosen pool has the same chance, like a wheel with identical slices. Press the button again for a fresh draw; previous results are not remembered, so a country can come up twice in a row.
What is in the list?
The list holds 199 countries and 46 territories, 245 entries in total. The countries are the 193 member states of the United Nations plus six more that are routinely listed as countries: the Vatican City and Palestine (UN observer states), Kosovo, Taiwan, and the Cook Islands and Niue (self-governing states in free association with New Zealand). Territories include Greenland, Gibraltar, Hong Kong, Macau, Puerto Rico, Guam and the French overseas departments.
| Region | Countries | Territories |
|---|---|---|
| Europe | 46 | 7 |
| Asia | 48 | 3 |
| Africa | 54 | 4 |
| North America | 23 | 18 |
| South America | 12 | 3 |
| Australia & Oceania | 16 | 11 |
North America here includes Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean. Countries that straddle two continents are placed once: Russia and Cyprus are listed under Europe, while Turkey, Kazakhstan, Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan are listed under Asia.
What are the odds of getting a given country?
chance = 1 ÷ (number of entries in the pool)
With every continent selected and territories off, each of the 199 countries has a 1 ÷ 199 = 0.50% chance. Turn territories on and the pool grows to 245, so each entry drops to 0.41%. Remember that continents are not equally sized: in the all-continents setting Africa supplies 54 of the 199 countries, so you land in Africa 27.1% of the time, against 6.0% for South America (12 of 199).
If you want every continent to have the same chance regardless of how many countries it holds, pick a continent first (with a die or the random picker) and then draw within it.
What counts as a country?
There is no single authority that settles the question. The UN list reflects membership, not recognition by every government, and several places are claimed by more than one state or exist in a disputed status. This generator takes a practical line: widely recognized states and the entities usually shown as countries on world maps are countries, and dependent or autonomous places are territories. Use the territories box to decide which of the two groups you want.
Applications for a random country picker
Geography games. Draw a country and have each player name its capital, a neighbor, its flag colors or its largest river. A draw keeps the game fair, and a single continent keeps the questions at the right level for a class.
Trip ideas. Stuck for a holiday destination? Let chance suggest a place, then look into it. Treat the result as a starting point; entry rules, costs and safety advice differ widely from place to place.
Writing and study. Use a random country as the setting for a short story, a research mini-project or a week of reading. For related draws see the random state generator and the random name picker.
Frequently asked questions
How many countries are in the list?
There are 199 countries and 46 territories. The countries are the 193 UN member states plus the Vatican City, Palestine, Kosovo, Taiwan, the Cook Islands and Niue.
Are territories included by default?
No. Territories and autonomous regions are only drawn when you tick Include territories.
Why is Russia in Europe but Turkey in Asia?
Both span two continents. This tool lists each once, putting Russia with Europe and Turkey with Asia, which matches common atlas practice.
Can I get the same country twice in a row?
Yes. Each press is an independent draw from the full pool.
