Clothing Size Conversion: Measure Your Body, Not the Label

Clothing sizes look like numbers but behave more like names. Charts pair a US 8, a UK 12 and an EU 40 as equals, yet two brands can label the same garment differently, and a brand can change what its sizes mean over time. This drift is often called vanity sizing.

The dependable method is to compare your measurements with the measurements a brand publishes. All you need is a soft tape measure and the inch-to-centimeter factor.

Why labels do not convert cleanly

No single sizing system is followed by every brand. A European standard for size designation, EN 13402, describes labelling clothes by body measurements in centimeters, but shops still mostly use national and brand-specific labels.

  • Women's charts often pair US 6 with UK 10 and EU 38. Other charts differ, and the same brand's tops and trousers may not follow the same pattern.
  • In the US and UK, men's jacket sizes are usually named for the chest in inches, so a 40 is designed for a chest of about 40 inches. The garment itself is larger, because it includes room to move.
  • Men's shirts in the US are often sized by neck in inches, while European labels give the neck in centimeters.

Treat any conversion between two labels as an estimate, and use a measurement table whenever one is offered.

How to take your measurements

Use a soft tape, wear thin clothing, and keep the tape level and snug but not tight.

  1. Chest or bust: around the fullest part, with the tape level across the back.
  2. Waist: around the natural waist, the narrowest part of the torso, usually just above the navel.
  3. Hips: around the fullest part of the hips and seat, with your feet together.
  4. Neck (shirts): around the base of the neck, leaving room for a finger under the tape.
  5. Inseam (trousers): from the crotch down the inside of the leg to the ankle bone.

Converting inches and centimeters

centimeters = inches × 2.54To go back, divide centimeters by 2.54.

3076.2
3281.3
3486.4
3691.4
3896.5

42106.7

Worked example: suppose a brand's chart lists size M as chest 96 to 101 cm and waist 81 to 86 cm. Your tape reads 38.5 inches at the chest and 32 inches at the waist. Converting gives 38.5 × 2.54 = 97.8 cm and 32 × 2.54 = 81.3 cm. Both fall inside the M range, so M is the starting point.

Collar sizes convert the same way. A 15-inch neck is 38.1 cm and a 16-inch neck is 40.6 cm, which European charts round to 38 and 41. The inches to centimeters converter, the centimeters to inches converter and the length converter handle any measurement.

Height, inseam and length

Tall, regular and short fits, trouser lengths and children's sizes all depend on lengths rather than girths. Children's clothing in many markets is labelled by height in centimeters, with the age range printed as an approximate guide only. Heights in feet and inches convert by first turning everything into inches:

cm = (feet × 12 + inches) × 2.54

5 ft 8 in68172.7
5 ft 10 in70177.8
6 ft 0 in72182.9
6 ft 2 in74188.0

Worked example: trousers labelled waist 32, length 32 are 32 inches around and 32 inches along the inseam. In centimeters both are 32 × 2.54 = 81.3 cm. A European label for the same trousers may give only a single size, so compare the measurements on the brand's chart and not the number.

Using a size chart well

  • Use the brand's own chart in the unit it uses, and convert your own measurements to match it instead of converting the label.
  • Compare with something that fits. Lay a garment you like flat, measure across the chest, and double it to get the full circumference. Garment charts list this directly.
  • Check the cut. Slim, regular and relaxed versions of the same size differ in room.
  • Allow for fabric. Stretch fabrics forgive small differences, while woven fabrics such as stiff cotton do not.
  • If you fall between sizes, read recent reviews for the item and check the return policy before ordering two.

Shoes follow the same logic. The article on shoe sizes around the world shows how to start from foot length instead of the label.

Try the tools
  • Inches to Centimeters Converter: Enter a length in inches and the same length in centimeters appears straight away, rounded to four decimal places. The conversion uses the exact definition of 2.54 centimeters per inch.
  • Centimeters to Inches Converter: Enter a measurement in centimeters and the converter shows it in inches straight away. Since one inch is exactly 2.54 centimeters, the answer is your figure divided by 2.54, rounded to four decimals.
  • Length Converter: Pick a unit, type a length, choose the unit you want and read the answer. The converter covers metric, imperial and nautical units in one place.
