Type in your hourly rate and your usual schedule. The calculator turns it into yearly, monthly, weekly and daily pay, taking unpaid holidays and vacation days off the total.

How the conversion works

An hourly wage and an annual salary describe the same pay over different time spans. To move from one to the other you need to know how many hours you actually get paid for in a year. This calculator builds that number from the five details on the form: the hourly rate, hours per week, work days per week, holidays and vacation days.

  • Weekly salary = hourly rate × hours per week.
  • Daily salary = weekly salary ÷ work days per week.
  • Days worked in a year = 52.14 weeks × work days per week, minus holidays, minus vacation days.
  • Yearly salary = daily salary × days worked in a year.
  • Monthly salary = yearly salary ÷ 12.

The figure 52.14 comes from dividing the 365 days of a year by seven days per week. Yearly, monthly and weekly results are rounded to whole dollars; the daily figure keeps cents.

All amounts are gross, meaning before income tax, social insurance and other deductions. Take-home pay will be lower.

Holidays and vacation days

The two day-off fields are subtracted from your working days, so they behave as unpaid time. That is the right setting for a worker who is paid only for hours worked, such as a contractor, a freelancer, or an employee on a casual contract.

If your employer pays you for public holidays and vacation, those days are already part of your salary. In that case enter 0 for both fields and the result becomes the straight yearly equivalent of your hourly rate. The form starts with 10 holidays and 15 vacation days as sample values; change them to match your situation.

Holidays and vacation days must be whole numbers. Hours per week and work days per week may include decimals, so a 37.5 hour week or a 4.5 day week is fine.

Worked examples

Full-time at $25 an hour. A 40 hour week over 5 days gives a weekly pay of 25 × 40 = $1,000 and a daily pay of $200. A year has 52.14 × 5 = 260.7 working days; taking off 10 holidays and 15 vacation days leaves 235.7. Multiplying, 200 × 235.7 = $47,140 a year, or about $3,928 a month. With no unpaid days off, the same wage gives 25 × 40 × 52.14 = $52,140.

Part-time at $18.50 an hour. Working 30 hours over 3 days a week gives $555 a week and $185 a day. The year has 52.14 × 3 = 156.42 working days; subtract 8 holidays and 10 vacation days to get 138.42. The yearly figure is 185 × 138.42 = $25,607.70, shown as $25,608, and the monthly figure is about $2,134.

Yearly pay for a 40 hour, 5 day week
Hourly rateNo unpaid days off10 holidays + 15 vacation days off
$15$31,284$28,284
$20$41,712$37,712
$25$52,140$47,140
$30$62,568$56,568
$40$83,424$75,424

A handy shortcut for a standard 40 hour week with nothing deducted: multiply the hourly rate by about 2,086 to get the yearly figure. Rule-of-thumb versions use 2,080 hours (52 weeks × 40), which is within a fraction of a percent.

Looking beyond the headline figure

A salary and an hourly wage are not always comparable on the number alone. Salaried jobs often include paid leave, sick days, pension contributions and health cover, which an hourly contract may not. Hourly jobs may pay overtime for hours beyond the standard week, which this calculator does not model, so enter your regular hours only.

If you are weighing an hourly offer against a salaried one, convert both to the same basis. Enter the hourly job's details here, and use the salary to hourly calculator for the salaried one. The salary converter moves between pay periods, and the working days calculator helps count the real days you work in a given stretch of the calendar. To total up hours you have already logged, use the work hours calculator.

These figures are estimates for planning, not payroll, tax or legal advice. Rules on overtime, paid leave and tax differ by country and employer. See our disclaimer.

Common mistakes

  • Leaving the default holidays and vacation days in place when your leave is paid. Set them to 0 in that case.
  • Entering total paid hours including breaks. Use hours you are actually paid for.
  • Entering the number of work days as the days you actually attend in a month instead of the days per week.
  • Treating the result as take-home pay. It is before tax.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert an hourly wage to an annual salary?

Multiply the hourly rate by the hours you work each week, then by the number of weeks you are paid for in a year. Using 52.14 weeks and no unpaid time off, a $25 wage for 40 hours a week is 25 × 40 × 52.14 = $52,140.

Why is the yearly figure lower than my rate times 2,080 hours?

Because the calculator subtracts holidays and vacation days from the working year. If your time off is paid, set both fields to 0 and the figure will be close to the 2,080-hour estimate.

Does the result include tax?

No. Every amount is gross, before tax and other deductions.

Why must holidays and vacation be whole days?

The calculator counts days off in whole days. Round to the nearest day: being a half day off in either direction moves the yearly figure by only half of one day's pay.
